Trickhouse Live is an integrative arts series that brings together people working with words, images, sounds, videos, and a variety of performances. The series serves as a venue for visiting artists to interact with local artists and for the borders between genres and mediums to be permeable. Trickhouse Live is a physical world extension of the online cross-genre arts journal, Trickhouse.org which is based in Tucson.

Performer Bios

Malachi Black is the author of Storm Toward Morning, forthcoming in October 2014 from Copper Canyon Press, and two limited edition chapbooks:  Quarantine (Argos Books, 2012) and Echolocation (Float Press, 2010).  His poems have appeared or are forthcoming in AGNI, Boston Review, Gulf Coast, Harvard Review, Narrative, Poetry, Ploughshares, and The Southern Review, among other journals, and in several recent and forthcoming anthologies, including Before the Door of God:  An Anthology of Devotional Poetry (Yale UP), Discoveries:  New Writing from The Iowa Review, and The Poet’s Quest for God (UK).  The recipient of a 2009 Ruth Lilly Fellowship, Black has since received fellowships and awards from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Emory University, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the MacDowell Colony, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, the University of Texas at Austin’s Michener Center for Writers, the University of Utah, and Yaddo. Black was the subject of an Emerging Poet profile by Mark Jarman in the Fall 2011 issue of the Academy of American Poets’ magazine, American Poet, and his work has several times been set to music and has been featured in exhibitions both in the U.S. and abroad.  He is Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of San Diego.

Emily Carr is recently inspired by feral cats, Indian wolfgirls, pirate lifestyles, the world wiped clean of answers (it’s where we’re at), the stars (you see they’ve been clear dead for years), countless continental moves & romping with the cat named Dirt, as well as the ability to comprehend beauty, which is poetry, & as to listen. & change, or be changed.

Why? Because it’s okay to be bewildered, run wild, or dwell like Robin Hood, outlawed & at home.

Emily Carr directs the Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing at OSU-Cascades. She has a doctorate from the University of Calgary, a master’s from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, & a bachelor’s from the University of Missouri. She’s received fellowships from Camac Centre d’Art, Vermont Studio Center, Writers in the Heartland, & the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Her second book of poetry, 13 ways of happily: books 1 & 2, was the winner of the 2009 New Measures Poetry prize. whosoever has let a minotaur enter them or a sonnet—, a collection of fairy tales, is forthcoming from McSweeney’s in August 2015.

 

Susan Briante was born in Newark, N.J., after the riots. She is the author of Utopia Minus and Pioneers in the Study of Motion, as well as an essayist on industrial ruins, cultural memory, and the intersection between poetry and financial markets. Her collection of poems, The Market Wonders, a finalist for the National Poetry Series, will be published by Ahsahta Press in 2016. Briante teaches creative writing at the University of Arizona.
