Workshop Description
Freelancers Heather Severson and Wynne Brown share their knowledge and resources to help writers, editors, designers, and other creatives take their skills to the marketplace, to earn a decent living as freelancers. Topics include business structure, record keeping, quarterly taxes, marketing, establishing rates and fees, tools of the trade, professional development, and more. The workshop is followed by lunch at a nearby restaurant for casual conversation and networking. In this three-hour workshop, freelance writers Heather Severson and Wynne Brown will offer an overview of the Nuts and Bolts of a successful creative freelance career.

Participants will:

  • Learn which business structure might be best: Sole Proprietorship, LLC, or Corporation.
  • Create a focused, individualized strategy to build clientele.
  • Identify ideal clients and markets.
  • Approach the challenge of setting rates and fees.
  • Discuss best practices for marketing and promotion.
  • Discuss the best tools of the trade, from software applications to professional development resources.

Facilitator Bios


Heather Severson is a Mercenary Writer and Gypsy Scholar. She runs StudioGraphia, a freelance cooperative that provides services in writing, editing, instruction, research and design. She enjoys sharing what she has learned from fifteen years of freelance writing, so others don't have to learn the hard way. If she finds out you are a freelance creative, she’s going to invite you to lunch. She is the chief instigator of the Mercenary Creatives of Southern Arizona. Wynne Brown is a writer, editor, illustrator, and graphic designer who specializes in biology, environmental sciences, and women's history. She is the author of two award-winning books: More Than Petticoats: Remarkable Arizona Women and The Falcon Guide to Trail Riding Arizona, both published by Globe Pequot Press. A new edition of Remarkable Arizona Women was issued in 2012 in honor of Arizona’s centennial. Most recently, she co-edited Cave Creek Canyon: Revealing the Heart of Arizona's Chiricahua Mountains, in addition to being responsible for all the design, layout, and production. Her clients include both large and small companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Carolina Biological Supply Company, Mayo Clinic, Golden Ink, Science Approach, and many others. She is both a “big picture” and a "detail” person who loves bringing words and graphics together in a way that lets an author’s concept shine.
