The paradoxical nature of authentic writing is this: the most introspective, personal work is often the most universal. This isn’t to say the writing needs to be purely confessional or outright revealing. Instead it looks like pulling from intimate places in ourselves, realizing what those threads of thought and experience look like, facing the walls built around them and then performing proper self care accordingly. Effectively using the unwinding to power the writing and redirect the soul.

In this 4-part workshop style class, participants will be asked to first be courageous for the sake of themselves and then transfer that intention to the page. We will explore different forms of literature that address the personal narrative style as well as do some writing in between each session around memory and experience. Participants should be prepared to share their writing with others each week, as we will function as a workshop of sorts in order to “find the story” in each other’s retellings.

This is a great workshop for anyone looking to conjure up more depth to their work, add new rituals or practices to their creative process or is looking to learn questions to ask in the revision process, for themselves or others. Everyone will come out of the class with hopefully a few new directions to take their work, a deepened understand of their own internal processes and a new lens in which to view and then write their experience.

Teacher Bio:

Em Bowen is a storyteller, a writer, a person who thrives, an essayist, a sister, a former (and occasional) mess, a cat-owner, an incredibly stable human and always changing (much as we all are, whether we realize it or not). Their work has been published in the Tucson Weekly, Zocalo, Wild Gender and The Feminist Wire. Em is currently pursuing their MFA from Goddard College and is the former producer of the Tucson Gender Identity Project. Their work pieces through just about anything that bares it teeth, the human condition, queerness, honesty and the ways in which we learn to survive better.
