Edge 66: a Reading Series of Emerging and Younger Writers
w/Lisa M. Cole, Jake Friedman, and Jon Riccio

Curator: Melissa Buckheit
Melissa Buckheit's Bio

A note from the curator: I have often wanted to listen to authors who are in the same place in their career as myself--emerging, published in journals, with a chapbook and/or a first full-length book, still growing but full of passion, new ideas, and an edge. But there is often infrequent opportunity for this; in fact, I have often felt disappointed in the lack, that such an open community might often be circumscribed in its literary programming.  Additionally, featuring emerging writers engages other young as well as established writers, to support, frequent and attend Casa Libre and other writing events. This cycle creates the foundation for a writing community which self-generates, remains true, open, and allows many voices the opportunity for visibility and being heard. I want Tucson to be an artistic community which includes and features many voices and peoples. Literature is the province of communication, but also reflectivity, the reflection and representation of all our narratives and of new narratives and ideas, voices which are challenging and also challenge us.

Come to Edge: A Reading Series of Emerging and Younger Writers. Edge is a series of local and national writers and cross-genre artists, emphasizing diversity of narrative, identity and literary source. Its purpose is to create community, visibility and voice for emerging and younger writers. Broadsheets of the authors' work will accompany each reading. Books and journals will be available for purchase and signing by the authors. Refreshments will be available after the reading.

Readers:

Lisa M. Cole is the author of the poetry collections Heart Full of Tinders and Dreams of the Living, and is a contributor to Wood Becomes Bone: A Mental Health Awareness Series, all three titles forthcoming from ELJ publications. Lisa has also written six chapbooks; most recently The Bodyscape from Dancing Girl Press, & the forthcoming Living in a Lonely House also from Dancing Girl Press. Lisa was a runner-up in SLAB's Elizabeth R. Curry poetry contest, and her poem "To Love You is to Vex You Now" can be found in the newest issue of SLAB. You can find out more about her at her new website http://lisamcole.blogspot.com/

Jake Friedman is the Founder and Editor in Chief of a Phoenix-based independent community literary magazine called Four Chamber.. He has also been seen: riding his bicycle; moderating writing groups; writing lots of poetry; running up and down streets; talking endlessly about the role of arts and culture in an urban experience; and arguing with people at parties about anarchism and / or Kant. Right now he's at work on a chapbook of poems about the service industry (among other things). He has also been known to edit.

Jon Riccio studied viola performance at Oberlin College and the Cleveland Institute of Music. An MFA candidate at the University of Arizona, he is a recipient of the UA Foundation Poetry Award. Forthcoming poems will appear in Four Chambers, Small Po[r]tions, Paper Nautilus and Petrichor Review. Current works may be found in Plenitude and online at Bird’s Thumb, Blast Furnace and Your Impossible Voice. Originally from Michigan, Jon is a coordinator of the WIP Reading Series at Casa Libre. He wishes to thank his UA mentors and cohorts for their time and generosity.

Next Edge Reading will be held July 16.
